Quick hits of consequential news from all corners of the world.

  1. 01

    UKRAINE

    Truce for Oleshky.

There’s now a limited humanitarian truce between Russian and Ukrainian forces around Oleshky, a Russian-occupied frontline town across the Dnipro River from Kherson. Details remain scant, but the idea is to allow help for the ~2,000 locals who’ve been reduced to eating grass to survive. (DW)

Comment: With Putin’s meatwaves and drone-strikes continuing across the rest of the front, this truce (first announced by Melania Trump) feels like a rare and fragile exception rather than any signal of a broader thaw.

  2. 02

    UNITED STATES

    Anthropic files.

AI giant Anthropic (of Claude fame) has filed for IPO, bringing it one step closer to what promises to be a mega-debut. Its filings reveal a 1,300% H1 jump in revenue, H1 net losses of $81B, and $112B in cash. (CNN)

Comment: In a presumed bid to juice the numbers, Anthropic just spent the last five weeks shipping three new models and slashing prices to supercharge usage. As for the IPO’s striking language warning AI could pose “catastrophic or existential risks to humanity”? It plays to the lab’s safety branding while also insulating it against future shareholder class-actions. One of those specific warnings (economic upheaval) just got another real-life example, with Microsoft offering voluntary buyouts to 60,000 staff in an attempt to offset its own massive AI spending.

  3. 03

    FRANCE

    Locked in.

Dismissing President Macron’s concessions (such as a pledge to replace an unpopular university admissions system), student union leaders have now urged pupils to keep barricading schools and marching until their “maximum” demands on funding and staff shortages are met. (NYT $)

Comment: This might be too little (triggering double-down rather than compromise) and too late (the protests went beyond students weeks ago).

  4. 04

    SAUDI ARABIA

    Crude awakening.

Crude is back near a six-month high of $115+ amid continued Houthi threats against Saudi energy infrastructure, and persistent leaks that the US plans to resume hits on Iran after the midterms (CNBC).

Comment: The presumed White House incentive to wait until after the midterms would be to avoid spiking energy prices even higher.

  5. 05

    THAILAND

    It’s a wash.

Sudden, torrential flash floods have locked down major transit corridors and tourist zones across Thailand’s Phuket hub, with meteorologists warning more heavy weather is on the way. (The Star)

Comment: Nothing kills the holiday vibes like having to trade your beach towel for a rescue raft, but it comes at the worst possible time, just as Bangkok rolls out its annual post-monsoon campaigns to lure big-spenders. With research suggesting weather will get more extreme and volatile, it’s also a reminder how fragile Southeast Asia’s most lucrative resort hub might be.

  6. 06

    ETHIOPIA

    Silent massacre?

An unknown group has killed a reported 60+ Christians in Ethiopia’s Oromia region, according to the country’s Orthodox Church. (BBC)

Comment: Local officials are pointing the finger at rebels who announced last month a coalition to oust the PM; but those rebels are pointing the finger right back at government authorities. So it’s genuinely unclear what’s happened, or who’s to blame, with potential motives ranging from the sectarian and nationalist, to destabilising the PM’s grip, or beyond.
