Germany’s big spy scandal

If we flew to LA and pitched you a movie about a spymaster busted for treason because a steakhouse heiress kidnapped her own kids, you'd give us the "Hollywood no" (all smiles, no answers).

But incredibly, that's what allegedly* just happened in Germany, starting with...

🎭 First, the cast

Police started out investigating who helped Christina Block — heiress to Germany's Block House steak empire — kidnap her own kids from their father (ex-husband) while watching the 2023 NYE fireworks together in Denmark!

In a bitter custody battle, she allegedly hired ex-Mossad operatives to deliver the startled kids to Block’s Hamburg hotel on New Year's Day, only for authorities to then return them to their father in Denmark, where they now live in hiding.

So… what’s any of this got to do with 80-year-old August Hanning, former head of Germany’s ~CIA, aka the ‘BND’ foreign intelligence agency?! Well that brings us to...

🧵 Second, the loose thread

The investigators followed the money and found ol' steakmaster Block had offered spymaster Hanning a cool $100k+ to help orchestrate a failed earlier 2022 kidnapping of her kids (aborted after the dad called cops on some suspicious men).

Mother Block then allegedly got Hanning's post-BND private consultancy to plant a hard-drive full of child abuse imagery on the father's garage roof, in hopes authorities would then return the kids to their mother. But that also failed after a forensic examination confirmed the horrid drives were all a plant!

So that's when the mother ditched the hapless Hanning and allegedly hired the Israeli mercenaries, but authorities followed the paper trail and raided Hanning’s home and offices last September 2025. That’s where police allegedly found...

🗡️ Third, the treason

Amongst his belongings, police stumbled upon an electronic storage device with 2,000+ BND intelligence reports! These weren't old briefings from Hanning's spymaster tenure (1998-2005), but apparently spanned as recently as June 2022!

How'd he get them? Police allege Hanning was buying them off his old agency chief-of-staff (‘Manfred D’), who’d gone on to serve as chief-of-staff to several other successive German spymasters right up until 2026!

And… what was in all those docs? German outlets say it had everything from high-level strategic dossiers for cabinet, through to updates on Russia's military, nuclear developments in Iran, and even allied memos shared in strict confidence!

But then of course, we're now left wondering about...

💰 Fourth, the motive

Hanning has long been the subject of rumours both because of...

  • a) His tenure under Berlin's famously Russia-friendly chancellor (Schröder) who — wouldn't you know it — just took another highly-paid Russian board seat

  • b) His seven trips to Russia since leaving government service, and

  • c) His various talk show cameos advocating for a softer stance on Russia.

But while initial speculation centred on these Kremlin links, the local Spiegel outlet is reporting that one of two main destinations for his intel reports was Azerbaijan!

Why would Azerbaijan want this stuff? Baku denies any role, but (in this theory) presumably saw Europe's largest economy and dominant player as...

  • a) a potential obstacle to seizing Karabakh (the Azeris yoinked it in 2023)

  • b) a future gas customer (the Germans duly signed on last year), and

  • c) a source of possible Western curve-balls given Azerbaijan's wild location as the only nation bordering both Russia and Iran.

Hanning’s second main client? A mystery, though outlets are quoting anonymous intel sources to insist it was neither Russia nor China.

But okay, then... why'd Hanning oblige?

As dull as this might sound, word is Germany’s ol’ spymaster was just broke!

After getting tangled in a failed Latvian banking venture, he allegedly turned his private firm into a rogue intel bazaar, repackaging BND secrets to buyers like Azerbaijan. And even if that was the only buyer, we'd still be surprised if Azerbaijan stayed the only reader (the Turks, Russians, and Israelis are all active in Baku).

Anyway, that's how a messy steakhouse custody battle accidentally unmasked Germany's biggest treason scandal in modern history. Hollywood couldn't write that if it tried (though we would kindly encourage Hollywood to keep trying).

Sound even smarter:

  • *Put ‘allegedly’ in front of pretty much every word above, given it’s all now before the authorities.

  • Azerbaijan is known for its use of 'caviar diplomacy' (✌️luxury gifts✌️) to help shape and neuter international opinion.
