China's robots aren't playing games

It's hard to know where to look first: the Looney Tunes-ass slapstick of a bipedal robot completely wiping out on the athletics track; the pure awe of another bot casually shattering Usain Bolt's 100m record; or the low-key shock of others going full Jetsons backstage by quietly microwaving snacks and routing cables for judges.
But no matter where you look, you're looking, which is kinda the point of China's second-ever World Humanoid Robot Games now underway in Beijing.
First, take a peek beyond all the virality at the organisers: we're talking the Beijing Municipality, the China Media Group (the state's primary propaganda arm), and the Beijing-backed-and-hosted World Robot Cooperation Organization (aiming to set the world's robot standards like Western groups did for the internet).
Or to put it another way: while this might look like just another neutral tech showcase chasing clicks and bucks (and yes, it is clearly that too), it's really more interesting viewed as a window into China's deeper strategy for the future.
And from our vantage, it's hereby sending three big messages, starting with...
🤖 The future is robotic
Take a look not so much at this year's event, but rather at the ways it's evolved compared to last year: yes, a doubling in teams and events, and a quadrupling in the number of robots (over 2,000).
But more intriguingly, the rules just got tougher: remote control is now more restricted or banned, forcing more of the bots to handle balance, navigation, and recovery fully on-chip.
And even more intriguingly, the events just got more industrial: 21 of this year's 51 events are purely "scenarios" testing micro-dexterity like wiring, sorting, restaurant service, and even operating household appliances.
Or to put it another way, yes, in a single year we've gone from "can this robot finish the race" to "omg that robot just beat Usain Bolt". But that's just the consumer-facing marketing layer. The deeper message is we just went from remote-controlled parlour tricks to autonomous, high-precision industrial labour in a year.
And yet this event doesn't just paint a picture of the future, so much as declare...
🇨🇳 That future is China's
641 of the 666 competing teams — and ~2,000 of their 2,056 robots — hail from China. Yes, that's partly because the West’s leaders (think Figure, Tesla, Boston) aren’t competing, presumably out of commercial caution, competitive secrecy, and discomfort with political theatre. The rest of the teams hailed from 16 nations (including the US, Germany, Japan, Brazil), but were mostly university and smaller commercial players.
Yet even with that throat-clearing out of the way, China's 96% domination of its own robot games now roughly matches China's dominance over global humanoid robot shipments. The big two (AgiBot, Unitree) alone now ship ~75% of all bots, while the US does ~3%.
The caveat is that shipments aren’t the same as productive deployment, many of those shipments are still early pilots, and the Games themselves expose other technical gaps (like how to… stop).
But it's not just end-product domination — from harmonic reducers and high-torque actuators to specialised batteries and frameless motors, China has now localised almost the entire supply chain. Or to put it another way, it's getting hard for anyone else to build a bot without relying on China-built parts, and all the scale, cost, and iteration advantages that accrue to China along the way.
Yes, the West still holds an edge in raw brains (AI models), but those brains increasingly run (literally) on China's hardware. Anyway, if any of this feels familiar, it's because you've already seen the two prequels, bringing us to...
⚡ The China Shock 3.0
If the first state-backed China Shock™ (2000s) was about dominating low-cost consumer goods, and the second (2015-2020s) has hit green tech's New Three (EVs, solar, batteries), then this next China Shock 3.0 is really about shaping the AI age.
We've long explored the risks China's high-quality and low-cost open models now pose to the founding assumptions of America's entire AI boom: the notion that closed models will preserve Silicon Valley's moat, guarantee monopoly pricing, require all this historic Big Tech capex, and justify Wall Street's historic valuations.
But these robot games are a reminder that China is not only focused on AI models, nor even breaking China’s reliance on the US-aligned chips underneath.
Rather, we're really seeing here a reminder that China is also racing just as hard to dominate the newer, physical half of this AI age: embodied intelligence.
