    UNITED STATES

    Pause on pause?

The latest China-US trade talks in Stockholm have wrapped with no clear outcome, beyond a likely possible truce extension subject to leader endorsement. (CNN)

Comment: Their current truce expires on 12 August, at which point earlier prohibitive tariffs would resume, though neither side needs another market freak-out right now.

  2. 02

    UNITED KINGDOM

    Or else.

Prime Minister Starmer has announced he’ll recognise a State of Palestine at the UN in September unless Israel allows unhindered Gaza aid, reaches a Hamas ceasefire, and halts West Bank annexations. Some critics say he’s using Palestinian statehood as a bargaining chip, while Israel’s Netanyahu says he’s appeasing terrorists. (BBC)

Comment: France is already set to become the world’s ~148th nation to recognise the State of Palestine in September, while ~30 states don’t yet recognise Israel.

  3. 03

    AUSTRALIA

    Show us some ID, mate.

The government is moving to include YouTube in Australia’s incoming ban on social media for under-16s, reversing an earlier stance that exempted the platform as more a video streaming than social media site. (ABC)

Comment: Tech giants have resisted this new world-first law given the potential domino effect, but Australia’s prime minister has shrugged off legal threats, and has pledged to promote the law at the UN in September, all while flanked by families who’ve lost kids to cyber-bullying. Silicon Valley will no doubt be seeking DC’s help.

  4. 04

    NORTH KOREA

    Rebuff thy neighbour.

Kim Yo Jong, the supreme leader’s sister and a top regime official, has announced her autocratic North has no interest in any peace overtures from the rival South, dashing hopes the arrival of the South’s pragmatic new leader might herald an off-ramp. (DW)

  5. 05

    INDONESIA

    Fighter’s regret.

There’s a heated debate now playing out after a former Indonesian marine posted a plea for help to axe his contract with Russia’s defence ministry and reinstate his Indonesian citizenship, which he lost by joining Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. (F24)

  6. 06

    ARGENTINA

    Come visit!

US homeland security chief Kristi Noem has met President Milei in Buenos Aires, as Argentina moves to rejoin America’s visa waiver program. Argentines had visa-free entry until a deep economic crisis hit from 2002. (BH Herald)

  7. 07

    IVORY COAST

    One more round.

Ending months of speculation, 83-year-old President Ouattara has announced he’ll run in October’s presidential elections, seeking a fourth term in office. The opposition boycotted the last election, arguing his third term was unconstitutional (he changed the constitution in 2016). (AfricaNews)
